I love my wife. I really, really do. And she is a fantastic cook, much better that I am. She has an intuitive sense of adding just the right ingredients and does whatever she needs to do to make her dishes taste their best. Her one drawback is that she tends to get distracted while cooking. Over-easy eggs often become very hard and dry. Pots boil over. And if something is cooking out of sight – like in the oven or toaster oven – watch out.
This morning, she burned the toast again.
We just celebrated our 16th wedding anniversary. We don’t make a big deal about anniversaries these days, except, I guess, to congratulate ourselves for making it through another year. Way back before the kids arrived on the scene, we would always go away for a long weekend around anniversary time. We’d stay at a B&B near the coast or in a cabin in the hills. It was so easy to do.
Not anymore, of course. We focus so much attention and energy on our kids and their activities, that there is very little time left over for “just the two of us”. Heck, Valentine’s Day came and went recently, and I am wrapped up in guilt for not having done more to show her how much she means to me. It’s time to re-establish our old tradition. I’m taking her away to someplace that’s quiet, cozy, and, yes, romantic.
And I’ll even burn the toast for her.
If you and your spouse want or need to get away, why not come to beautiful Hocking Hills in Southeastern Ohio? You can stay in one of our genuine log cabins. Check us out at www.cabinsinhocking.com

I found a great place to take my horse for vacation or weekends
The place is only 45 minutes from me because I live in the Columbus Ohio area. It is called Hocking Hills area and it is hilly. The website where I booked the cabin is www.cabinsinhocking.com. They were really helpful about where I could go riding with my horse. I am always looking for new places to go trail riding. My horse is stabled and the place I have her at is small and flat so this was really different. I ride mostly in the ring, so it was nice to get her out in the open.
Our cabin was really nice and right next to the round pen so my horse was never far away, that was also nice to be able to spend so much time with her, her name is Lady. The cabin was located on 60 wooded acres. We rode all around that property and then we decided to head over to the State Park which has hundreds of acres for riding. While we were in Hocking we saw lots of sights and ate some good food. All in all it was one of our best vacations.

Wow it was better than I remembered…
It has been at least 30 years since I last saw Tecumseh and let’s just say that I never thought 30 years ago when I was 12 that I would someday be bringing my 10 and 8 year old to see Tecumseh. You see I grew up in Ohio but have since lived in NJ, NC and for the last 10 years FL, but I go back to Ohio for family reasons like a recent graduation of a nephew from time to time.
On this trip someone said they had just been to see Tecumseh and how great it was and then it all came flooding back to me. As a kid I remember how surreal the whole thing was, I mean you are sitting outside late at night with all these Indians dressed well, as Indians did back in the day and they are very loud and fighting to the death. It is also pretty wild and very exciting. It is also just a very unique experience for a kid, I don’t think I have ever had anything quite like it since, there is something about being outside at night watching a play, you kind of feel like your part of it or that it is real. I think this must speak to the quality of the show. Like I said I saw it 30 years ago and it has probably been going on a lot longer than that. All this praise is actually very unusual for me because I really don’t like plays. Like I said I lived in NJ and I would get dragged to NYC to see Les Miserab, Miss Saigon, Grapes of Wrath and others I don’t remember or slept through–I know, I know it’s bad to admit, but true.
I looked at the website and the people that put on the show are the real deal, they come from all around which must be hard to do since the show is in Chillicothe Ohio, not exactly NYC. Anyway I liked it and I recommend it. I also liked the place I stayed at which was www.cabinsinhocking.com

We had a corporate retreat last week in Ohio. Have you heard of a “corporate retreat”? It’s where the boss decides that he (or she, in my case) needs to get the team away from the office and plot strategy or team build or commune with nature or whatever. I dreaded it. I didn’t want to spend 2 nights under the same roof with the guy that just annoys me constantly or the women who won’t stop talking. Well, they both did those things, but, guess what? I didn’t mind. I actually had fun!
We went to Deer Mountain Retreat in the rural Hocking Hills area of Southeastern Ohio. They say it’s in the foothills of the Appalachians, but these hills seemed more like mountains to me. There were 21 of us, and we stayed in the Deer Mountain Lodge and 2 other cabins. We all could have easily fit in the lodge, but I’m glad we had the other cabins so we could really spread out. We had the meetings and breakouts in the Lodge. I didn’t feel the same tenseness and pressure that I often do in the office. Maybe it was the peaceful, country setting, but I felt like I could open up and discuss how I really felt about the business issues we were facing.
The team building was a blast. I don’t know how much team building we accomplished, but the hikes and the cave explorations were great. I don’t know about you, but getting paid for 3 days of fun was great for me. And the boss said we’re going to do it again next Summer too!
Deer Mountain Retreat has many great offers you can take advantage of and all their cabins come with all the amenities you can think of…except food of course. If you’re looking for a great place to get away from it all then Hocking Hills is the place for you. The web address is www.cabinsinhocking.com

I don’t know how we pulled it off. 12 married guys who play poker together. For years we’ve talked about a poker road trip. And that’s all it was – talk. We finally decided to make it happen. We started planting the seeds in the fall, and a few weeks ago, we finally got all the wifely approvals we needed.
We’re renting a log cabin lodge in Hocking Hills, OH, from Deer Mountain. Hocking Hills is a beautiful, hilly region of southeast Ohio. The lodge sleeps more than 20, so we’re more than OK on space. We’re renting it for 4 days in March. That’s four days of poker and watching NCAA hoops! I’m sure we’ll do other activities, since there are a lot of natural activities like exploring caves and waterfalls.
The best part for me is that Deer Mountain is on 67 acres of prime hunting grounds. Now, we probably won’t actually hunt anything, but it will be fun to scour the woods and see what we could have bagged. They have facilities for horses, too – but we’re not into that. You should check them out at: www.cabinsinhocking.com

We just had a family reunion in January. One week of mothers, fathers, sisters, brothers, aunts, uncles, cousins and who know who else. We’d never really done it before. There were a couple of half-hearted attempts, but there were always a lot of people who couldn’t make it for whatever reason.
This year, we decided to do it right. We contacted Deer Mountain Retreat in Hocking Hills, OH. We told them we would need their Deer Mountain Lodge (sleeps 22) plus some of their other log cabins. They told us “no problem”, but just let them know how many people in total were coming so they could make the arrangements. Turns out we had 41 people (there are a lot of Kelly’s in the Midwest). Besides the lodge, we took up 6 other log cabins. They were pretty much all centrally located, so there was no problem congregating at the lodge and its 60 acres of forested hills. We hiked the trails. We enjoyed the hot tub (ALL of the cabins had hot tubs). We had fires in the fire ring and the kids really had fun with the huge tire swing.
On the days we ventured out, we explored ancient caves, hiking, and, of course, there was a lot of shopping for the ladies among us in Logan. The week brought us a thousand laughs, a few skinned knees, and a hundred memories. These are the kind of vacations we want to spend on a yearly basis now. Deer Mountain Retreat did all they could to accommodate our every need. If you would like more information on the beautiful mountain sanctuary we found, you can find them on the web at www.cabinsinhocking.com or give them a call at 740.331.4840

Seriously, my ten year old daughter asked me that question a couple of months ago. She’s old enough to know what’s going on with our economy. She’s heard my husband and I talking about what this recession is doing to our family business. She knows times are tight. For as long as she can remember we’ve gotten on a plane, or rented an RV, or driven a thousand miles for our summer vacation.
But we just can’t do it this year. We live outside of Columbus, and I grew up around here. I remember going to Hocking Hills, Ohio as a kid – Old Man’s Cave, Lake Logan, the state parks – and it was just 45 minutes from Columbus. I went on the web and found Deer Mountain Retreat. They have beautiful log cabins for rent that have all the amenities of home. We booked a cabin that is close to all the attractions and yet gave us the peacefulness we needed to “get away from it all. This “quaint” log cabin looks even nicer than our home.
My daughter is thrilled with a different kind of vacation and my husband and I were happy to let her (and us!) enjoy it. The hot tub is the icing on the cake! There were many cabins to cho0se from and if you are truly intersted you owe it to yourself to check them out online at www.cabinsinhocking.com or call for more information at 740.331.4840

When a whole bunch of us decided to get together and go to Hocking Hills, Ohio for 5 days. We thought no big deal, we will just get some cabin or maybe 2 close to each other and it will be easy. Well it wasn’t, most places are small or have one Lodge that sleeps 12 or 14, but we would need 3 of those to accommodate all of us. I must have looked at 20 different websites until I came to one www.DeerMountainRetreat.com. They had 4 big cabins on one street all of them were within walking distance but were still on 2-5 acres of land. The cabins were set back from the road so you were in the woods when you are in the cabins.
The cabins were all newer and 3 bedrooms with hot tubs, grills, fire rings, fully supplied with everything you need, even games to play. It was really great to run around with the group during the day and then if you wanted some quiet or privacy you could always go to your cabin and have that too. It was also good to have 4 separate kitchens for all our food. With a group that big we decided to grill at one cabin one night, order pizza another night, we did potluck one night. Everyone brought a few dishes from each cabin, it really worked out well, and was not overwhelming for anyone. Everyone ate breakfast at their own cabin and we packed lunch for the day or ate out.
It also helped that we had 4 hot tubs, with 34 people we never would have been able to all get in the hot tub. Most of the cabins had 6 person hot tubs so I did not hear of one complaint on that. At night we all got together around a fire ring and built a big bonfire, sometimes we even sang songs and just had a lot of fun.
We had so much fun that we have decided to do it again in 6 months in the spring. If this sounds like a great time and you would like to get some more details on all the cabins and amenities they offer at Deer Mountain Retreat, call them today at 740.331.4840 or online at www.cabinsinhocking.com. They sometimes have special offers you can take advantage of. Your family will be glad you did.
